Building on the Women, Peace and Security agenda, UN Security Council resolution 2242 calls for greater participation and leadership of women in developing strategies to prevent terrorism and violent extremism. The UN Secretary-General’s Plan of Action on Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) highlights that societies with higher gender equality indicators are less vulnerable to violent extremism and that women’s empowerment should be included in PVE strategies. But both proposals recognize the challenges of implementation, ranging from definitions, to understanding the gendered drivers of radicalization to violent extremism, to funding.

What does a gender sensitive approach to PVE look like? How do we translate these proposals into practice at the local, national and international levels? How are women and girls impacted by the rise of violent extremism?
