The impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on women and girls are strongly linked to their unequal access to the tools needed to respond to climate disasters, such as decent work, land and finance. The International Labor Organization estimates that global warming and environmental degradation are putting 1.2 billion jobs at risk, with women expected to be most severely impacted due to their high representation in sectors vulnerable to climate change. As countries move towards adopting legal and policy frameworks that enable a just transition towards a low-carbon and sustainable economy, we must ensure that women are not left out. In fact, if well managed, a just transition presents an important opportunity to achieve gender equality in the world of work.
To achieve this, an enabling legal environment and the elimination of pre-existing gender inequalities in the world of work will be critical.
This discussion will explore the critical linkages between a just transition and women's rights in the world of work, and highlight approaches and practices to advance the role of legal and policy frameworks in delivering a gender-responsive just transition.
