Cary Adams
Chief Executive Officer,
Union for International Cancer Control (UICC)
Gender is a major determinant of health with women facing significant challenges when it comes to
cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, from biological and medical effects to psychosocial
concerns, financial well-being, exposure to risk factors and discrimination. We need to address the
root causes of gender inequalities - the cultural norms that dictate the role of women in society,
which often render them structurally marginalised - to break down the barriers to equal access to
cancer care for women.
I support the IGC Panel Parity Pledge.
I support the IGC gender-based violence pledge.
Personal Commitments
As the oldest and largest organisation driving global action in cancer control, UICC commits to continue championing the role of women in cancer control across all functions of the organisation, through: a) ensuring women are represented in internal leadership positions b) striving for women to be given equal opportunities in all activities and programmes.
We commit to raise awareness and support the global cancer community to address inequities in access to cancer care for women, championing the need for gender-responsive healthcare systems. Moreover, UICC specifically pledges to support The World Health Organization (WHO) in its work towards the priorities set by the Global Breast Cancer Initiative Framework and the Global Strategy for cervical cancer elimination.
