I am convinced of the importance of promoting gender equality through mainstreaming gender in programmes and initiatives through which we support our Member States as well as through achieving gender parity in our organisations’ staff. I am therefore delighted to join the International Gender Champions
I will ensure progress towards UN commitments on gender equality and women’s empowerment as reflected in the “UNOV/UNODC Strategy for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (2018 -2021)” by providing leadership and support for the implementation of the Strategy’s Action Plan. I will also use every opportunity, on all country visits related to UNODC projects and programmes to monitor the implementation of programmes promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, either by visiting a programme with a gender component or focus and/or by integrating a gender perspective in my speaking engagements.
I strongly support the Secretary-General’s efforts to improve the approach of the United Nations to preventing and responding to sexual harassment in the workplace. Even one case is too many. I will ensure effective adherence to the UN zero-tolerance policy and continue to raise awareness, enhance further protective measures to promote a victim-centred approach and will boost available mechanisms to support staff.
