Violence against women in politics is an intolerable violation of women’s and civil rights, and a fundamental challenge to democratic values and processes – yet it continues to plague both younger and more established democracies, as recent events have shown.

A 2018 study conducted by IPU and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) reveals truly appalling statistics:

  • 85.2% of the 123 female parliamentarians who took part in the study said they had experienced psychological violence during their term of office
  • 46.9% had received death threats or threats of rape or beatings
  • 14.8% had experienced physical violence

This needs to stop!

On Wednesday 25 November (15-16:30 CET) - the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Kofi Annan Foundation will convene a group of experts and leaders* in the field to discuss concrete solutions and policy responses, and promote their urgent adoption and implementation.
