Context
Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) is a significant threat to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda: it suppresses the participation of women and girls in civic, political, and peacebuilding processes, from contributing to the silencing of frontline activists to deterring women from pursuing politics in post-conflict societies. The implications of this threat to women and girls are present and persistent. With a recent study demonstrating that 70% of women human rights defenders, activists and journalists reporting having experienced online violence in 2025, this upcoming session of the IGC's Espresso for Equality explores how to ensure that the major new risks and issues posed by TFGBV are reflected within WPS discussions and agreements. 

Purpose of this briefing         
Expert speakers Shimona Mohan and Hana Salama will present UNIDIR’s new factsheet on the implications of TFGBV for international peace and security. They will explore how TFGBV undermines the goals of the WPS agenda and which practical actions actors in International Geneva can take to respond to these harms. 

During the optional discussion, participants will be invited to discuss the following questions: 

  • How can UN agencies embed TFGBV-related considerations into their own institutional and wider multilateral mechanisms? 
  • How can we ensure that disarmament fora recognise TFGBV as a threat, and take relevant steps to further support victims and prevent abuse? 
  • What are some practical steps that member states can take to improve data collection and update reporting processes on TFGBV in conflict settings?
