To mark the tenth anniversary of the Human Rights Council, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights and the Graduate Institute invite you to a film screening and debate.
Sonita would have liked to be the daughter of Rihanna and Michael Jackson rather than an illegal immigrant in Iran, but she doesn't let that get her down. Not worrying about the fact that women aren't allowed to sing, or that her family would like to sell her off for marriage, she records a rap album about forced marriage. A cinematic revelation, Sonita won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
Sonita (2015, 90 minutes, English/Farsi) will be followed by a panel debate on the subject of child marriage, featuring:
Dubravka Šimonovi?, United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences
Andrea Bianchi, Professor of international law, The Graduate Institute, Geneva
Mohinder Watson, Founder, Action on Child, Early and Forced Marriage; Geneva UN Representative for the International Alliance of Women
Entry is free, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
