Introduction:
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR), WIIS Austria presents a one-day conference focused on the intersections between the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda and disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation in an effort to bridge the gap and connect the issues.
Although a gendered-approach to disarmament falls within the four pillars of the WPS agenda, disarmament is not explicitly mentioned in Resolution 1325 – except in the limited context of disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR). In fact, a gendered-approach is missing from most disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation frameworks.
As the world prepares to debate the WPS Agenda and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), it is vital to reflect on and suggest substantive ways to improve coherence and coordination among international frameworks in the field of peace and security.
This conference will address the future challenges in disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, illuminate where WPS and disarmament converge, and foster discussion on the impact feminist policy and a gendered-approach can have on these fields.

Content:
20 years after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in 2000, we can look back on a great number of policy initiatives and action plans to implement the resolution and the subsequent resolutions on Women, Peace and Security. Moving forward, 2020 should be a year to take stock on what has been done and to continue this endeavour with new momentum as it is not only the 20th anniversary of UNSCR 1325 but also the 25th anniversary of the UN’s Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing.
From policy makers to international organizations, from research institutes to grassroots initiatives, each stakeholder’s efforts mark a crucial step towards successful implementation of UNSCR 1325 and thus a peaceful world for all.
If you can not participate in the conference, you can still register for the live webinar discussion!
The discussion will be held in English.
