Where:

The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) bans nuclear explosions by everyone, everywhere: on the Earth's surface, in the atmosphere, underwater and underground. The Treaty opened for signature in September 1996 and has been signed by 185 nations and ratified by 170 nations committed to international peace and security.

The core mission of the CTBT’s unique and comprehensive verification regime is nuclear test monitoring, however, the International Monitoring System (IMS) provides a treasure trove of data that can be used for a variety of applications, such as climate change research and disaster warning and mitigation.

On International Women’s Day, it should be acknowledged that women have disproportionately borne the consequences of the legacy of over 2000 past nuclear tests. Similarly, climate change can also have an uneven impact on women. Hopefully, the scientific research and potential applications based on IMS data may offer benefits for women, humanity overall and the planet.
