Crises affect everyone, but due to detrimental social norms and structural barriers that result in an underlying disadvantaged position, women and girls are often disproportionately impacted. The COVID-19 pandemic is no exception to this.

The 2020 Vienna Discussion Forum will focus on how crisis preparedness, response and recovery efforts need to be gender-responsive to ensure that they do not reinforce inequalities but rather strengthen the principles of human rights, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and the commitments of the 2030 Agenda.

The Forum will look at crisis management through the lenses of the mandates of UNODC and UNIDO to identify how these organizations can contribute to post-pandemic reconstruction and beyond.

The Vienna Discussion Forum is an annual event to discuss gender equality and the empowerment of women in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. Details on the inaugural 2019 Forum can be found here and here.
