On the occasion of the 20 year anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, the IGC Den Haag Hub seizes the opportunity to look back at what has been achieved in the last 20 years and what challenges still remain to be tackled today. Together with Ms. Christine Schraner Burgener, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar, we will discuss the role of women as agents of peace.

Christine Schraner Burgener, born 1963, a Swiss lawyer, served 27 years as a Diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland. She was Deputy-Director of the Directorate of International Law, with rank of Ambassador. She served in this capacity as the Coordinator for Counterterrorism on Foreign Policy and as the Secretary General of the International Humanitarian Fact Finding Commission. In 2004 she was the Coordinator on interoperability and “Friend” of the President of the Conference in Dublin 2004 on Cluster Munitions. In 2009-2015 she supported the reconciliation process in Thailand in her capacity as the Swiss Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand. In 2015-2018 she was the Ambassador of Switzerland to the Federal Republic of Germany. Since May 2018 she is the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar in the rank of an Under-Secretary-General. She is married and has two adult children and speaks German, French, English and Japanese.
