Together with the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in Geneva and the London School of Economics' Women in Diplomacy project, the International Gender Champions are holding a high-level workshop on women's participation in global diplomacy.
The 'Women in Diplomacy' (WiD) project was launched in 2022 with the mission to improve women's representation and leadership in diplomacy, foreign policy, and policy-making by identifying barriers and enablers to women's advancement in national ministries, diplomatic services and international organisations. Since its inception, the project has actively engaged with practitioners, led discussions online (through podcasts) and offline (through workshops), and held public events. The WiD team built meaningful partnerships with women’s networks, national foreign ministries, and international organisations, positioning the project as a bridge between academia and practice. In June 2024, the WiD team published an inaugural report on 'Strengthening the Representation of Women in Diplomacy: Challenges and Policy Solutions'.
The report itself was a first step to understanding and uncovering the trends and potential solutions to advancing women’s representation and voices in diplomacy and foreign policy. Now, the WiD team intends to use it as a basis for further dialogue and discussion in workshops.
The workshop intends to:
- Present and evaluate the contents of the 2022 Women in Diplomacy report and developments since its publication;
- Explore specific barriers and enablers to representation of women in diplomacy, foreign policy, and policy-making in greater detail;
- Share best practices from different institutions;
- Collaboratively design actionable recommendations (at the governmental, institutional, and individual-level) to include in an updated report on strengthening women’s representation in diplomacy.
This workshop is designed specifically for high-level women diplomats from international organisations, creating a safe space for peer exchange, experience sharing and dialogue. To RSVP, please send an email to admin@genderchampions.com.
