Barbershop Conference: Changing the Discourse Among Men on Gender Equality

Senior Geneva leaders spoke personally about confronting gender bias at a “Barbershop Conference” March 9, 2016 on the sidelines of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Iceland and opened by Iceland’s Foreign Minister Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, the event was inspired by the HeForShe campaign and the Geneva Gender Champions initiative, Moderator Michael Kimmel, Professor of Sociology at Stony Brook University, led the conversation focused on changing the discourse among men on gender equality. Panelists were: Roberto Azevêdo, Director-General of the World Trade Organization; Christian Friis Bach, Executive Secretary, UNECE; Kate Gilmore, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights; Ambassador Keith Harper, U.S. Representative to the Human Rights Council and Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
