'Open Situation Room': Championing Gender Equality in Climate Action

On Monday, 19 August 2024, the International Gender Champions Secretariat held a High-level event titled  “Open Situation Room: Championing Gender Equality in Climate Action.” Organised by the International Gender Champions’ (IGC) Climate-Gender Impact Group and hosted by the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the event brought together an Geneva-based Champions and technical experts for an engaging, interactive session on the Climate-Gender Nexus.

The IGC Climate-Gender Impact Group, launched earlier this year on 14 February 2024, is co-chaired by Elise Buckle of Climate Bridges and SHE Builds Bridges for Climate, Jagan Chapagain of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Ambassador Christian Guillermet Fernández of Costa Rica, and Ambassador Dr. Katharina Stasch of Germany.

The unique format of the event, based off a methodology developed by the German Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Mercator Foundation and inspired by John F. Kennedy’s Situation Room concept for crisis management, allowed for real-time problem-solving and collaborative idea generation. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions to exchange insights, identify priorities for action, and discuss joint principles for placing gender equality and inclusion at the centre of climate action. Participants’ contributions and priorities influenced the drafting of a pledge on joint leadership principles for gender-responsive climate action, which will be shared with the larger public later in the year.

This event was made possible with the support of the United States Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva.
