Future Directions for Gender-sensitive Ammunition Management Processes
Unplanned ammunition depot explosions, as well as conflict, violence and crime resulting from ammunition diversion, affect women, men, girls and boys differently. Responding to these challenges requires a comprehensive integration of gender considerations across the lifecycle of ammunition. However, to date, there is insufficient knowledge available about the link between gender and ammunition management.
In response to this knowledge gap, UNODA is implementing a project to promote effective, safe and secure ammunition management through the development of gender-responsive guidance. As part of this project, a practical guide on gender mainstreaming ammunition management policies and practices was developed with the Small Arms Survey, with the financial support from Germany. The guide, “Gender-sensitive Ammunition Management Processes: Considerations for National Authorities”, will be presented at the side event.
